To make the perfect tense (past tense) in German, we need to use an auxiliary verb (Hilfsverb) ‘haben’ or ‘sein’ and the past participle. We use this form in English to talk about the past:

e.g. I have eaten – have is the auxiliary verb (Hilfsverb) and eaten is the past participle. We must use both otherwise the sentence does not make sense.

In German, however, we don’t just use the verb to have ‘haben’, we sometimes use the verb to be ‘sein’ as the auxiliary verb (Hilfsverb). We use sein when there is movement from one place to another, so with verbs like to go (gehen), to travel (fahren), to swim (schwimmen), etc…

The past participle usually begins with ‘ge’ and we add ‘-t’ to the stem of the verb:

e.g. machen = gemacht spielen = gespielt

Some verbs are irregular (unhappy), i.e. they do not follow the normal format. You just have to learn these past participles off by heart. A list of common ones is at the bottom of this post.

German is like English, when we use a verb in a sentence, you must use the pronoun with it (i.e. I, you, he, she…). Below is a list of the personal pronouns, this is the order that we learn verb endings in too:

When you use a verb you have to change the ending of the verb depending on which pronoun you use (i.e. if you want to say ‘he eats’ or ‘you eat’). To do this you must take the ‘-en’ off the infinitve of the verb to get the ‘stem’. (e.g. fahren (to travel) – the stem would be ‘fahr’.) Once you have the stem you must add the correct ending. Below is a list of the verb endings for each pronoun:

The problem is that not all verbs follow this pattern in German, a few verbs are ‘irregular verbs’ – that means that they don’t follow the normal pattern above. The good thing is that most ‘irregular’ verbs are only irregular in the ‘du’ and ‘er/sie/es’ forms. Below are examples of three ‘irregular verbs’. I have only included the ‘ich’, ‘du’ and ‘er/sie/es’ forms of the verbs as the rest follow the normal pattern.

Unfortunately there is no rule with irregular verbs – you simply have to memorise them!!
